Greetings from the Biology GSPA! In this month's newsletter, we've highlighted some of the recent accomplishments among members of the department and advertised some exciting events coming up in October.

Department Happenings:
Congratulations to Sarah McPeek (Brodie Lab), who won the Ecological Society of America’s Theory Section Volterra Award for the best theory talk by a graduate student at the annual Ecological Society of America meetings. She presented her talk: “Resource evolution shapes the contemporary ecology of mutualisms in communities,” during an invited symposium on mutualism theory at the August meetings in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Congratulations to Juliana Jiranek (Gibson Lab), who had a paper accepted from her undergraduate research: Predicting the effects of climate change on the cross-scale epidemiological dynamics of a fungal plant pathogen

* GSPA Meeting: Thursday, Oct. 6th, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM, PLSB 403
Join us for our October public forum meeting! Snacks are provided! This month, our discussion topic is: “What do you want out of your graduate/postdoctoral training?” Come share your questions, concerns, and ideas about how we can improve department life, both academically and socially. If there are anonymous concerns you would like to share ahead of the meeting, please fill out this form.

* Hiking with GBS: Saturday, Oct. 15th, 3:00 PM, Ivy Creek
Join GBS for hiking at Ivy Creek! This is an easy and nearby trail. Spend an hour or two away from papers and experiments by enjoying nature and socializing. It should be noted that no animals are allowed on this trail. We hope to see you there! Sign up!
* Social Gatherings: GSPA Halloween Party: Friday, Oct. 28th, 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM, PLSB 4th Floor Balcony
GSPA is hosting its annual Halloween party! We will be having a baking competition and a costume contest, so come out with tricks and treats! Party attendees will vote for the best baked product and the person with the best costume. Winners of the contests will earn a prize!
Program in Fundamental Neuroscience's (PFN) First Halloween Party: Monday, Oct. 31st, 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM, Gilmer Room 400
Come party with the PFN for Halloween! We will have potluck food and drinks! Bring your Halloween or neuro-themed carved pumpkin to Gilmer room 400 between 4:00 PM and 4:30 PM on Oct. 31st to register for the pumpkin contest. Send a picture of your decorated lab door to [email protected]. Party attendees will vote for the best lab door decorations and best carved pumpkins to win a prize while at the party. Please RSVP using this link to bring treats or drinks or to volunteer. Costumes are optional but much appreciated!
