From molecular mechanism to evolution in nature: insights from swordtail fish
Biologists have long been fascinated by how the incredible diversity of life on earth has arisen and been maintained. Research in our lab group focuses on investigating natural variation from a molecular, genomic, and evolutionary perspective. We are particularly interested in understanding the interplay between genetic and evolutionary mechanisms as new traits evolve and species emerge. Our work focuses on swordtail fish as a model system for these processes – an incredibly diverse species group that has been a model for both adaptation and speciation. With the ability to study evolution in nature leveraging diverse populations in the field and genetic mechanisms using high-throughput experiments in the lab, this system is helping us better understand the genetic basis of trait evolution and the emergence of genetic barriers between species.
