Bachelor of Arts in Biology (B.A.)

Students who complete a B.A. degree in Biology will be able to…

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of core concepts and principles in genetics, cell biology and evolution.
  2. Appreciate the different levels of biological organization, from molecules to ecosystems.
  3. Explain the importance of evolution through natural selection for understanding structural and functional diversity in biology.
  4. Interpret and critically analyze observational and experimental data to solve problems and investigate biological phenomena.
  5. Explain the importance of the scientific method for understanding biological phenomena.

As outlined in these Learning Objectives, the B.A. degree program provides a solid education in the biological sciences, and students who complete the B.A. degree are highly competitive for admissions to premiere medical and graduate schools. In addition, because the B.A. degree requires fewer biology courses than the B.S. degree, it is ideal for students who plan to pursue a biology major together with a major or minor in another discipline or who want to take advantage of the diverse courses offered in the College’s humanities and social sciences.
