New or Returning Courses
BS Core, Area II (3cr)
Are developmental biology and regenerative biology one and the same? Throughout this course, we will emphasize both classical and modern experimental approaches that have been used to unravel the genetic, molecular and celluar mechanisms of development. Additionally, the practical value of understanding development is enormous, and the relationship between embryology and clinical applications will be a theme that runs throughout the course.
Area II (3cr)
Emphasis on the functions and integration of human nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, and renal systems in maintaining homeostasis, and by extension, health. Normal function, from cells to organs, of each system provides a foundation for study of mechanisms that lead to dysfunction and the identification of potential therapeutic targets and strategies.
Area II (3cr)
Life on earth has continued for three-and-a-half billion years, resulting in the remarkable diversity of plants, animals and microorganisms we see around us. Yet individual organisms are distinctly mortal. The longest-lived multicellular organisms probably survive only a few thousand years (although this lifespan may be extended to tens of thousands of years if organisms can remain in cryptobiosis - e.g. roundworms frozen in permafrost [Shatilovich, PLoS Genetics, 2023]). How is it that living organisms are perishable, but life is persistent?
Area 1 (3cr)
Most likely, you know someone that has been affected by a nervous system disorder. From Traumatic Brain Injury to Alzheimer’s Disease, nervous system disorders affect millions of families and have long fascinated doctors, scientists, and the general public. In this course, we will explore what happens when things go wrong in the nervous system. Specifically, we will explore a wide variety of nervous system disorders, focusing on cellular and molecular mechanisms. We will also examine the history, significance, symptoms, and treatment of these disorders and their impact on society. Additionally, we will explore the impact and importance of science communication and the process for funding scientific research. We will accomplish this through a combination of lectures, primary-literature discussions, writing exercises and assignments. This course is designed to develop your skills in reading, analyzing, and interpreting scientific data, while emphasizing practical scientific writing and presentation skills.
January 2025 (JTerm) Course Schedule
BIOL 4559 - Plants and Global Warming: From Cell Function to Ecology and Evolution BIOL 4585 - Genetics of Metabolic Health (Benedict Lenhart)
January 2025 - (JTerm) New Courses!
(Antoine Perrier & Alfredo Lopez) Area III (3cr)
This course explores the intersection between climate change and plant biology across broad scales, from physiological responses to ecological relationships and evolution. Students will not only gain in-depth knowledge of how plants respond to environmental change, but they will also be able to understand how contemporary problems are addressed by scientists, and will be able to relate how global challenges can have impacts on individual lives.
Area II (3cr)
This course aims to benefit undergrad education by both enriching their knowledge of metabolism and genetics and developing the tools to expand their learning. The curriculum will focus on modern understandings of genetics and metabolic health, viewed through metrics such as insulin resistance, obesity, and cholesterol levels. Through covering the genetic components of metabolic disorders, students will gain more background when considering society’s bias toward obesity. Finally, this course aims to improve student proficiencies in several key research skills through self-driven inquiry and workshops. Students will practice data analysis, organization of a research plan, and examination of literature, to propose a research study of their own design.

Biochemistry options for the Biology BA major (07/7/2022)
Starting Fall 2022, biology majors (BA) who are interested in biochemistry should plan to enroll in BIOL 3030, which satisfies the Area 1 (Cell/Molecular Biology) disciplinary requirement. CHEM 4440 will no longer be considered an alternative to taking BIOL 3030 and will no longer be eligible for Area 1 elective credit. Students who complete CHEM 4410 may apply 3 credits towards their elective credits (Area 1). Students who complete both CHEM 4410 and CHEM 4420 may apply 3 credits towards their elective credits (Area 1) and three credits towards upper-level electives; note that CHEM 4420 does NOT qualify as an area requirement. Students who completed either CHEM 4410, CHEM 4420 or CHEM 4440 between Fall 2021 and Summer 2022 may apply 3 credits towards their degree as upper-level Biology courses (Area 1).
