Students declaring a BS in biology major on or after August 1, 2024 will have new course requirements. Students who declared a BA in biology before August 1, 2024, but have not yet declared a BS in biology, may choose to follow either the current requirements or the requirements for the catalog year in which they declared the BA.

Get Involved in Biology Research
Students are encouraged to consider Independent Research experiences as part of their Biology major. Research opportunities are available in many faculty laboratories at the University of Virginia, and course credit may be obtained for work in laboratories within the Biology Department, in some research laboratories in other departments in the College or in many research laboratories in the basic science departments in the Medical School. BIOL 3420 Human Anatomy and Physiology II
Only the first semester of Human Anatomy & Physiology I (BIOL 3410) may be applied toward the Biology major. BIOL 3410 also satisfies the upper level lab requirement and the Area II requirement. The second semester of Human Anatomy & Physiology II (BIOL 3420) cannot be applied toward the Biology major, but can be used as college elective credit and contribute to the overall GPA.
