Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Biology
Students who complete a B.S. degree in Biology will be able to…
-
Demonstrate an understanding of core concepts and principles in genetics, cell biology and evolution.
-
Appreciate the different levels of biological organization, from molecules to ecosystems.
-
Explain the importance of evolution through natural selection for understanding structural and functional diversity in biology.
-
Interpret and critically analyze observational and experimental data to solve problems and investigate biological phenomena.
-
Explain the importance of the scientific method for understanding biological phenomena.
-
Communicate scientific data and ideas effectively.
As outlined in these Learning Objectives, the B.S. degree program provides intensive study in the biological sciences. It is designed primarily for students who plan to pursue largely technical careers in the biological sciences immediately after graduation. Completion of the B.S. degree does not necessarily confer a competitive advantage for students when applying to either medical or graduate programs. In addition, the significantly greater number of science courses required for the B.S. degree makes it extremely difficult for students to pursue a double major or a minor in another discipline.
