Congratulations to Alan Bergland on his recent publication in the Proceedings of the National Acadamy of Sciences of the United States (PNAS) journal.

This study focuses on the theoretical conditions required for populations to rapidly adapt to changes in the environment over seasonal time scales. Bergland and his colleagues show that certain parameters, such as the dominance coefficient at any given locus, are critical for the stable maintenance of fitness related polymorphism that underlies rapid adaptation to environmental fluctuations. Theoretical models developed here will provide an important context for interpreting patterns of genetic variation in natural populations of a variety of organisms.
