The Graduate Recruitment Initiative Team (GRIT) is looking for current BIMS/Biology/SEAS students who are interested in joining GRIT Council 2024-2025! 
You may nominate your peers or self-nominate to council positions for the upcoming year.

Why Serve on GRIT?
Are you passionate about promoting diversity and inclusivity in graduate education? GRIT is a grassroots student organization that works to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion for historically excluded minorities across UVA graduate programs by leading and planning initiatives & events to support recruitment, retention, and sustainability. We are calling for dedicated individuals to join our council. As a council member, you'll have the opportunity to develop essential leadership skills while contributing to the recruitment and retention of historically excluded minorities in several UVA graduate programs. You will play a pivotal role in organizing impactful events such as the diversity dialogues, which facilitate important conversations surrounding the challenges and experiences of underrepresented groups. Additionally, you will be instrumental in planning and executing GRIT Day, a flagship event that celebrates the achievements and contributions of historically excluded minorities in academia. By joining the GRIT council, you will have the power to shape a more inclusive and equitable graduate community at UVA.

Descriptions of the Council Responsibility

Biology Vice President and SEAS Vice President will share responsibility including but not limited to casting a vision for the organization’s development. Draft detailed long term plans for GRIT, including visions, goals, and large scale dynamics with faculty and staff at the University of Virginia. Presiding over leadership and general body meetings and compose the meeting agenda.

The Treasurer is responsible for maintaining the financial records of GRIT and ensuring proper budgeting and allocation of funds. In addition, the treasurer will be responsible for timely and transparent bookkeeping and financial reimbursements. The treasurer will work closely with Executive Leadership and will obtain co-signatures with the GRIT president on all financial documents. The Treasurer of GRIT is responsible for organizing all GRIT-related data in a centralized location and managing student recruitment and retention data to measure the effectiveness of our organization quantitatively.

The Secretary is responsible for the organization within GRIT, including the delegation of tasks and managing the schedule of events. The Secretary is responsible for the collectioning, maintenance and distribution of meeting minutes. They will serve as the main contact for GRIT members, handle leadership and diversity training opportunities, and oversee meeting logistics and member attendance.

The Communications Chair will oversee the management of GRIT documents, literature, resources, and social media accounts, ensuring their organization and accessibility for GRIT members. This includes compiling and maintaining a central repository of GRIT documents, acquiring pertinent literature on Diversity and Inclusion, curating a set of resources to support GRIT members, and managing social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and the GRIT website. Additionally, the Communications Chair will be responsible for community outreach and engaging incoming first-year students.

 
GRIT Day & Diversity Dialogues
The key events organized by GRIT are the annual retreat, GRIT Day, and the diversity dialogues, which take place during recruitment.

During GRIT Day, responsibilities such as event planning, room booking, communication with DEI department chairs, food and drink arrangements, and collaborating with other DEI programs are shared among board members. However, the Treasurer plays a crucial role in managing the centralized location and student recruitment and retention data specifically for GRIT Day.

Diversity dialogues are integral events organized during BIMS, SEAS, and Biology recruitment days, providing prospective students an opportunity for candid discussions with current graduate students. As the organizer of diversity dialogues, your responsibilities will include recruiting graduate volunteers, arranging the Zoom link or in-person attendance, and coordinating with the respective departments for seamless execution.
