Greetings from the Biology GSPA! In this monthly newsletter, we have highlighted some of the recent accomplishments among members of the department and advertised some exciting events coming up in May!

Department Happenings:
Congrats to the EXPAND fellows: Louis Bubrig (Gibson Lab), Kendall Branham (Siegrist Lab), and Robert Porter (Bergland Lab).

Congratulations to the winners of the talent show! 1st place winner - Daniel Nondorf, 2nd place winner - Rachana Bhave, and 3rd place winner - Erin Scott + Juliana Jiranek

Congratulations to Juliana Jiranek who received the NSF GRFP honorable mention!

Congratulations to Philip Tubergen (Danna Lab) and Roberta Onoharigho (Campbell Lab), nominees for the 2023 Graduate Teaching Award.

Yuanming Liu (Cang Lab & Campbell Labs) and Elise Savier (Cang Lab; former research associate) publish in Neuron titled: "Mapping visual functions onto molecular cell types in the mouse superior colliculus"

Congratulations to Maira Jalil (Campbell Lab), who was awarded the Abstract of Distinction Award, Cardiovascular Section, at the American Physiology Summit 2023.

GSPA Travel and Research Award Application
GSPA is accepting applications for a research award of up to $250. Interested applicants should email Kendall Branham the completed application by May 15th. 

May Events:
* GSPA Meeting: Monday, May 1st, 12:00 PM - 01:00 PM, Gilmer 400
Join us for our May public forum meeting! 
Snacks are provided! We'll be wrapping up what we achieved this year as well as goals for next year. Come share your questions, concerns, and ideas about how we can improve department life, both academically and socially. If there are anonymous concerns you would like to share ahead of the meeting, please fill out this form.  

* GRIT Meeting: Monday, May 1st, 03:30 PM - 04:30 PM, Hybrid - BEC in McKim Hall & Zoom
GRIT will be having its next general body meeting.
 Please join us in person for free coffee, biscotti, snacks and virtually via Zoom. Meeting ID: 929 8160 0394; Passcode: glia. We will be talking about some exciting, upcoming community events as well as discussing fun summer activities! In addition, we will be reviewing our new resource pages and debriefing on BIMS, Biology, & SEAS recruitment.

* GSPA End-of-Year Picnic: Friday, May 5th, 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM, PLSB 4th floor lounge and balcony
Come celebrate the end of the year with your fellow biologists! 
Pizza and drinks will be provided. Please sign up if you'd like to bring any other potluck items to share! All are welcome!

* Joint Craft Night: Wednesday, May 10th,  04:30 PM - 06:30 PM, BEC in McKim Hall
Please join GBS, GRIT, QIMS, and WIMS for a fun & relaxing Craft Night!
 This event is open to all members of the GBS, GRIT, WIMS, or QIMS communities (students, postdocs, technicians, staff, admin, and faculty are all welcome)! The Craft Night is also open to both new and experienced crafties! Select crafts & snacks will be provided (see flyer for details), but feel free to BYOC(raft), if desired. Please use this link to sign up so we may gauge attendance. Hope to see you there!

GRIT-Hosted Biology Coffee Hour: Wednesday, May 3rd, 03:15 PM - 04:15 PM, PLSB 4th Floor Balcony 

Take a break from your desk for coffee and afternoon snacks with your fellow biologists. All are welcome, just bring your own mug! GRIT will provide Panera Bread coffee and Pastries during the usual Wednesday biology coffee hour at 3:15 PM! Please come and enjoy some coffee and treats and learn more about GRIT.
