Eighty rising 9th and 10th grade students from central Virginia attended this year’s 4-day BLAST camp at UVA (https://vsgc.odu.edu/blast/). In the Biology Epidemic! module hosted by Dave Kittlesen, Kay Christopher, and former students Amanda Briegel and Elise Rebellato, BLAST participants solved puzzles of epidemiology, DNA sequencing, and small molecule separation. They also discovered the mechanism and key design features of rapid antigen tests and learned about microscopy with a tour of the Keck Imaging Center and by assembling their own basic microscope. We had a ‘BLAST’ working with these budding young scientists!
