Associate Professor Martin Wu has received a $100,000.00 grant sponsored by the UVA Global Infectious Diseases Institute for research with Clostridium difficileClostridium difficile infection (CDI) poses a major healthcare burden to the global population and is the biggest antibiotic-resistant threat in the United States. In this study funded by UVA’s Global Infectious Diseases Institute, the researchers will develop a tool for real-time CDI antibiotic resistance diagnosis using the Nanopore sequencing technology. The ultimate goal is to enable personalized CDI medicine that eliminates improper and prolonged antibiotic treatment, reduces treatment failures and decreases the overall medical expenses to the individual and society. This is a collaboration between Dr. Wu and Drs. Ann Hays, Cirle Warren and Sook Hoang in the UVA School of Medicine.
